Key West Flats Fishing Charters specialize in putting novice and expert anglers on the hard-hitting game fish found on the Flats. Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon hunt the Key West Flats for baitfish, crustaceans, and shrimp; these large fish seek out the warmer shallow waters that help them conserve their energy for feeding. The water is perfectly clear in many parts of the Flats, and pursuing game fish here combines the best of fishing and hunting. Often referred to as “Sight Fishing”, this sport requires silence, stealth, patience, and sharp eyes as the fisherman works to locate a fish, slip up on it, then make an accurate bait presentation before the target spooks and flashes away across the sand or slips into the grass beds.
Key West Flats Fishing is done from specialized Flats Boats: flat-bottomed, shallow-draft skiffs outfitted with raised spotting towers. The guide stands on the tower, poling the craft silently through water that may be less than 2 feet deep while scanning ahead for signs of feeding or moving fish. The most commonly used gear is light tackle, either spinning or fly fishing rigs, so a hookup is guaranteed to lead to an exciting fight.

For protection from the hot sun of Key West, it is always best to cover yourself as much as possible. Caps or sun hats, bandanas, sun glasses, and of course sun screen are all necessities.
