This act effectively isolated Keys Citizens from the U.S. mainland since the blockade was on the only land artery to and from the mainland. So in true Key West tradition, Key West seceded from the US. This was immediately followed by surrender to the US and then request for “war reparations”. The secession and subsequent partying is a source of pride to most residents of Key West, i.e., The Conch Republic.
